The former NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner say The former NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner says it's vital to reduce the stigma around men seeking mental health support.

NSW Australian of the Year, Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, made the call during his Australia Day address in Sydney.

In the speech, Commissioner Fitzsimmons also reflected on the challenges of drought, bushfires and COVID-19.

He said a phone call from a colleague who had sought help but was reluctant to talk about it has stuck in his memory.

"We need to break the stigma and the onus is particularly on us men. We've got to do more, we must do better.

"There is no shame in having emotions, in being concerned and having anxiety."

Some of the biggest challenges to transitioning to a life after sport are highlighted here by Victoria.

Having a career path to step into post competing makes a big difference in maintaining some structure to your life once the training lifestyle is gone and goals to excite and occupy you.

The Athlete Advantage will work with you to start refining your options while you are still competing so you have a plan and goals ready to go once you retire.

We are very happy that six years on, Crossing the We are very happy that six years on, Crossing the Line is doing the job that was always intended.

When Covid-19 hit, we had a large influx of visitors to the website, more than 11,000 new users came to access our free resources and content, from all over the world. The postponement or cancellation of global events, such as the Olympics, really tested the mental health, career longevity and resilience of everyone involved.

The sporting community at large value the independence of organisations like ours. We are a free resource for all of the sporting community: athletes past and present, parents, coaches and administrators. We intend to build on our following during 2021.

We are excited about our new partnership with @aca_cycling; the continued work with @rupert.guinness in his pursuits to raise awareness of mental health; and we thank our founding partner Michael Drapac for his continued support.

Being present, noting and appreciating what we hav Being present, noting and appreciating what we have in the moment is a key tool to being a resilient athlete and even these greats say they didn't do it enough in their careers!

It is also valuable when making the transition to life after sport. Taking the time to acknowledge what you have achieved, the skills you have, the networks you've built as well as really enjoy the transition period and the new challenges and experiences that come with it.

As well as enjoying getting more sleep and time with friends and family!

Great to see athletes working towards their goals Great to see athletes working towards their goals outside sport 🤸

It's no easy feat to train full time and run a business, but we know balancing athletic goals with life outside sport improves performance and resilience 👍 Nice one Rosie.

Rosie Popa is a member of the Australian national rowing team. She is a world medalist and is on track to participate at the Olympics in Tokyo.

She also values the benefits of having an identity outside of sport and definitely walks the talk, having recently founding a business – @rosemarylocal – that brings together creativity, commerce and opportunities for athletes.

Rosie chatted to us about the mission behind her new business and how she runs it while remaining at the top of her sport and you can read about it on our website www.theathleteadvantage.com (link in bio)
