The Footy Show, an Australian production, takes a candid look at depression in sport. Comes in two parts and is well worth a watch even if you feel you aren’t depressed. Maybe one of your team mates is and this could help you identify it and help with it.
Athletes are masters at covering depression and sport provides the perfect platform for hiding it. Hopefully we are moving towards a culture in sport where the “weakness” is perceived as NOT declaring you have depression as opposed to declaring it.
It is very encouraging to see that Footy in Australia, traditionally seen as a supremely macho sport is taking this on and naming the elephant in the room. Giving the nation of fans the opportunity to see their heroes as vulnerable humans, just like they are.
